Huge fake cigarettes, brand rolls seized in Kushtia

KUSHTIA: Acting on a top-off, a team of detectives led by Kushtia divisional officer of customs, excise and VAT department Roksana Khatun conducted a drive at Kanabil intersection in the district town, and seized fake 25 cartoons cigarettes (250,000 sticks).

ALM Tobacco of Kushtia has been manufacturing and selling cigarettes of different popular brands, across the country using fake brand rolls.

The effective measures have been taken against the ALM Tobacco as per customs, excise and VAT law, said the divisional officer. She warned that strict action will be taken against any government-approved company if it tries to evade revenue of the government.

“We will take stern measures, including penalty, against ALM Tobacco if it again manufactures and sells fake cigarettes in future in dodging taxes,” she cautioned. Roksana also warned other tobacco products companies not to commit such crimes.

She asked all officials of customs, excise and VAT department in Kushtia to perform their duties with honesty and devotion during revenue collection.

Meanwhile, sources said that a gang is working at Kanabil of Kushtia to sell ALM Tobacco’s counterfeit cigarettes across the country at lower prices.

Also, it has been found that the forgers’ syndicate at first targets different companies; later it supplies counterfeit brand rolls to those and finally sell the products in the market.
