Jail authorities clarify their position

The Dhaka Central Jail authorities have issued a rejoinder on a report headlined ‘Crimes Galore’ published in the daily sun on Friday.

A written statement signed by Senior Jail Super Iqbal Kabir Chowdhury on the same day termed the news as ‘false and fabricated.’

About the drug issue, the jail authorities said they maintain a zero tolerance policy against illegal drugs. Anything required to be taken in the jail are allowed only after proper checking by metal detectors, archways and body scanners.

About existence of “Amdani Cell,” they said they have no such cell. The authorities also denied allegation of sale of packages of good food and accommodation for money.

Denying the allegation of renting hospital beds to VIP prisoners for a monthly amount of Tk15,000 with Tk3,000 for taking care, the statement said they provide treatment to the patients on the beds and do not rent those to VIP captives for money.

About homosexuality issue in the jail, they said they were yet to receive such complaints from anybody.

“Why did reporter not mention the names of the sources about the news?” they also enquired.
