Two killed in road mishap

CHATTOGRAM: Two persons were killed and another was injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a covered van at Banshkhali upazila in the district on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Rahima Begum, 48, wife of Maruf Hasan, and her niece Sumaiya Akter, 13, daughter of Jamir Hossain, of village Banshkhala under the upazila.    The injured was the auto-rickshaw driver Md Selim, 30.

Inspector Mamun Hasan of Ramdash Munshir Hat Investigation Centre said the accident took place around 12:30pm when a Chattogram city-bound covered van collided head-on with a Banshkhala-bound auto-rickshaw in front of a refueling station in Banigram area. The accident left the three auto-rickshaw passengers injured critically, he said.

They were rushed to a local hospital where on-duty physicians declared Rahima and Sumaiya dead, the police officer said adding that driver Selim was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital later.

They detained the covered van, but its driver and helper managed to flee, he said.
