BOGURA: The bitter gourd farmers are mostly happy over fair market price as well as good output in Bogura district this season.
“I have cultivated high-breed bitter gourd variety in my 22 decimal of land spending Tk 15,000 aiming financially self-reliant,” said farmer Chhumir Hossain under Serpur upazila. He also said, “I have already sold the crops at Tk 25,000 and expecting to make over Tk 24,000 from the rest of the crops.”Each maund of bitter gourd is being sold at Tk 1200 to 1300 in the wholesale markets. The retail market is over Tk 25 to 30 for each KG of the crops.
In a recent visit at Choumohany Bazar under Dhupchanchia kitchen markets the correspondent found the farmers are gathering from the very early in the morning to sell their produce to the wholesalers. The wholesalers are taking preparation to export the crop across the country mitigating local demand.
The peasants of the agri-prone region had sowed the seed of bitter gourd last October and started harvesting the crops from last couple of weeks. They are also exporting the crops across the county mitigating local demand.
The farmers show more interest to grow the crops as they are to invest trifling money against massive profit, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Faridur Rahman. He also said they have provided all sort of necessary support, he added.
Meanwhile, the peasants are getting bumper production of the vegetable due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-input, said farmer Kalim Uddin under sadar upazila.
DAE official said bitter gourd farming is boosting the economical condition of the farmers this season. The farmer show more interest to grow the crops as its cultivation is easy and lucrative, he added.
