More Malaysia-bound Rohingyas rescued

COX’S BAZAR: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive rescued 12 Rohingya people, who gathered to go to Malaysia through waterway, from a residential hotel at the district headquarters on Thursday.  

Law enforcers also arrested two human traffickers identified as Md Jahed Alam, 27, and Md Nurul Islam, 21, from the hotel in this connection.

Of them, Jahed is a Rohingya and resident of Thaingkhali camp under Ukhia upazila in Cox’s Bazar district while Nurul hailed from Lohagara upazila in Chattogram district.

With the rescued persons, a total of 93 Malaysia-bound Rohingyas were rescued from different areas of the district over the last one week.

Rab-7, Cox’s Bazar Camp Commander Major Mehedi Hasan said on information, they conducted a drive at residential ‘Hotel Rajmoni’ of Fazal Market at the district headquarters in the morning.   

A total of 12 Rohingyas including four women were rescued from the hotel during the drive, he said.

Rab officer Mehedi said they also arrested the human traffickers when they tried to flee sensing presence of the law enforcers.

The rescued Rohingyas informed that they gathered at the hotel to go to Malaysia through the waterway, he said.    The arrestees admitted that they had been involved with the human trafficking for long, the Rab officer said. 

The rescued were handed over to concerned police station for taking legal action in this connection, he added. 

Mentionable, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rescued 28 Rohingyas including seven children while being trafficked to Malaysia through the waterway from Teknaf upazila on February 8.

The BGB-men also rescued 22 more Rohingyas including 11 children from the Teknaf upazila on Monday last.

Besides, police rescued 31 Rohingyas including six children from Moheshkhali upazila in the district on February 6.
