Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Thursday asked the election officials to conduct the upazila elections in accordance with law.

He said there is no need to compromise their principles during the upazila elections. He was addressing a training programme for returning and assistant returning officers on the upcoming elections in 129 upazilas.

“Officials are accountable to the republic and the Constitution, not to any political parties or individuals. You should not have any weakness towards anyone,” the CEC said.

He said, “If the presiding officer thinks that it is not possible for him to conduct the election and if the returning officer thinks that the elections are beyond his control, then he will recommend suspending the election.”

He also asked the election officials to perform their duties as per the constitution.

“Voters always want us to present them a free, fair and acceptable election. Holding a free, fair and credible election is fully depending on your performance,” said the CEC.

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said the upazila elections have lost its value, as it is not participatory.

He said democracy cannot flourish without multiple parties. One-party democracy is not acceptable, he added.
