PM to inaugurate Karnaphuli tunnel digging Feb 24

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the excavation of Karnaphuli tunnel on February 24.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader revealed the prime minister’s plan on Monday.

The Awami League leader was speaking at a ceremony organised for signing an agreement between the Bridges Authority and Bangladesh Navy for the tunnel’s security, at Shetu Bhaban in the capital on Monday.

Commodore Mahmud Maleque from Navy and Kazi Ferdous from Bridges Authority signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides.

The tunnel will be excavated by modern and well-equipped Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said, “Navy has been appointed to ensure security of Tk 65crore Karnaphuli tunnel excavation  project.”

He informed the media that a proposal had been sent to the premier for naming the tunnel after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

While addressing, Navy chief Vice Admiral AMMM Aurangzeb Chowdhury said, “Navy will ensure overall security of the project.

Apart from this, we have set up a office nearby to provide first aid treatment to people,” he said.

The total length of the proposed tunnel will be about 9.3 kilometres, 3.4 km two tubes under the river, an approach road of 5.25 km and 727 metres of over-bridge.”

The cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 8446.64 crore. The Chinese government is funding the project and Bangladesh is bearing the cost of land acquisition and utilities.

The construction of the project began on December 5, 2017 and is due to be completed by December 2022.

About 32 percent work of the project have so far been completed, sources said.
