AL’s Lipi elected unopposed

Ruling party candidate Dr Syeda Zakia Nur Lipi, also the sister of late former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, was elected unopposed as MP of Kishoreganj-1 constituency.

Returning Officer Md Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury, also the district’s deputy commissioner, made the announcement at his office on Sunday evening.

By-election in this constituency was scheduled for February 28, but she was declared winner after two other candidates — Jatiya Party’s Mostaeen Billah and Ganatantri Party’s Bhupendra Chandra Bhowmik Dolon — withdrew their candidature.

Lipi is the daughter of late Syed Nazrul Islam, who served as the acting president of Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War.

The seat fell vacant after Ashraf died on January 3 at a hospital in Bangkok.

Ashraf was also elected MP from the constituency in the last four general elections — in 1996, 2001, 2008 and 2014.
