Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of police have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping three youths in Gazipur and demanding Tk 30 lakh (3 million) as ransom for their release.
The two ASIs are Abdullah Al Mamun of Kaliakoir Police Station in Gazipur and Musfiqur Rahman of Mirzapur Police Station in Tangail district.Police said the accused policemen have already confessed to their involvement in the incident. But they are blaming each other for it.
The victims are Raihan Sarkar and Labib Hossain, residents of Baraibari area of Kaliakoir upazila, and Nowshad Islam, a resident of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur.
Raihan said he and four of his friends were going to Dhaka International Trade Fair in the capital by a private car on Wednesday.
On their way to the capital, they stopped at Shila Bristy Gas Filling Station along Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakoir area to take gas.
At that time, two of their friends — Taribullah and Rakibul Rahman — went to a nearby shop to take tea while the rest stayed inside the car.
As the three youths advanced several yards with the car after taking gas, the two ASIs along with 4-5 people intercepted the car and forcibly picked up them in a microbus. The accused took the three youths beneath the under-construction Dewra Flyover in Mirzapur and demanded Tk 3 million for their release.
The policemen also threatened to kill them in crossfire if they fail to pay the money. After bargaining, the policemen fixed the deal at Tk one million.
In the meantime, Taribullah and Rakibul informed Kaliakoir Police Station and families of the abducted young men about the matter.
Following the phone call, Taribullah said, “A team of Kaliakoir Police Station went to the spot and said ASI Mamun and Musfiqur might have been involved in the incident.”
When the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliakoir Police Station phoned ASI Mamun, he confessed to it.
The three youths were first taken to Mirzapur Police Station and then taken to Kaliakoir Police Station around midnight.
The ASIs were subsequently suspended in connection with the incident.
The abducted young men said they were asked to submit a written complaint to Gazipur Superintendent of Police Shamsunnahar over the matter.
Kaliakoir Police Station ASI Mamun said he did not demand ransom, Musfiqur did it.
“I just assisted him. It was a huge mistake assisting them,” he said.
On the other hand, Mirzapur Police Station ASI Musfiqur said, “The youths were picked up as per Mamun’s direction. Mamun demanded Tk 3 million from them.”
Gazipur Police Station sources said Mamun and Musfiqur were once stationed at Kaliakoir Police Station.
They were allegedly involved in ‘arrest business’ while they were in Detective Branch (DB).
They allegedly looted money and gold ornaments from the houses of the accused.
