Bumper drumstick yield expected in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT: A good number commercial drumstick (Sajina) growers are expecting good yield this season in Joypurhat district.

The trees have been flowered massively predicting bumper production due to favourable weather condition, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Azizur Rahman. The vegetable have already started crops from the bud elsewhere the district, he again said.

More than 30000 trees have been planted both in homestead and orchard in all five upazilas of the district in a commercial basis for making huge money.

The farmers are expecting to harvest the crops next month if the weather conditions remain favourable, said farmer Anarul Islam, 34, at Pachuil village under Khetlal upazila of the district. He also said, the farmers are taking care at the trees aiming for bumper production across the area.

While visiting the correspondent found the farmers are watering at the trees and spraying pesticide to drive the harmful incest from the flowers. They are keeping the orchard clean and bush free by taking frequent step.

A farmer can make over Tk 0.2 million from some 2000 big tress if the price remain high during the harvesting period. Its cultivation needs not more capital and labour.

Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sudhindranath Roy said we have provided all sort of necessary agri-inpute to make the programme a grand success. Farmers are showing more interest to bring the new crop land under sajina cultivation elsewhere the area, he added.
