Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Monday said that the government would take a tough line with unlicensed water suppliers.

Tough action will be taken against those who supply low-quality water to people, he said.

The minister came up with comments at the co-ordination meeting of Pure Drinking Water Manufacturing Association of Bangladesh at the ministry.

The minister also said order will be given to Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution to conduct special drive.

It is the responsibility of the government to ensure safe water for people, he said. The minister also ordered the Association to submit a list of unlicensed water supplying organisations immediately.

Leaders of the Association who attended the meeting said unlicensed sellers are distributing substandard water. As a result, consumers are being taken in while licensed businessmen are being adversely affected, they said.

They demanded that the government take steps to stop production of PET jar which is made of low quality polythene to ensure safe and pure water.

Convener of Pure Drinking Water Manufacturing Association of Bangladesh Md Neyamul Hoque Ripon, Member Secretary Md Mojibur Rahman and Joint Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad were present, among others.
