The Election Commission on Tuesday decided to hold the by-election to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation on February 28.
It will also hold the election to the posts of general and reserved councilors of Dhaka north and south city corporations on the same day.EC Secretary Helal Uddin revealed the election plan to newsmen after a meeting of the commission on Tuesday.
“Elections to both Dhaka north and south city corporations will be held on February 28.”
The last date of filing nomination is January 30, and the nomination paper will be scrutinised on February 2. The last date of withdrawing nomination paper is February 9.
DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 at a London hospital.
The mayor underwent treatment there for almost four months.
Annisul was elected the first mayor of DNCC in 2015 with support from the Awami League. He served over two and a half years of his five-year term before his death.The previous polls of the two Dhaka city corporations were held on April 28.
The Local Government Division declared the mayoral post vacant, giving the Election Commission 90 days till February 28 to arrange the by-polls.
According to Local Government Election Act, city corporation representatives are elected to a term of five years following their first meeting.
The new Dhaka north mayor will serve the remaining length of the previous mayor term.
Besides, the election to the posts of councillors in 36 new wards — 18 in DNCC and 18 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) — will be held on the same day.
Meanwhile, re-election to Kishoreganj 1 constituency will also be held on February 28 as the parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of Syed Ashraful Islam.
Polling will be held on February 28, the last date of filing nomination is January 31. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on February 3 and the last date of withdrawing nomination paper is February 10.
