283 free textbooks seized, one held

CHATTOGRAM: Members of Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) recovered 283 government text-books from a bookstall in the city’s Anderkilla area on Sunday night.

Brother of owner of the bookstall identified as Snehashis Talukdar alias Jewel, 28, was arrested in this connection. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-North) Md Kamruzzaman of the DB said on receiving information, they conducted a drive at the ‘Prakash Bichitra’ in the Anderkilla area under Kotwali Police Station on Sunday night. They recovered 283 government text-books published for free distribution among students of school from class-I to XI during the drive, he said.

Besides, some text books of Madrasha were also recovered during the drive, the DB officer said.

He suspected that some unscrupulous teachers and staff members of educational institutions were involved in the incident and supplied these books to the stall for sale. The involved persons show higher number of students compared to the actual ones to sell the extra books to the bookstalls, he said. 

The bookstall owner Debashish Talukder went into hiding following the arrest of his brother, the ADC said adding that drive was going on to arrest him. A case was filed.
