Tk 608 crore Chinese grants for welfare

Under the agreement of economic and technical cooperation between the two nations, Chinese government will provide grant assistance of nearly Tk 608 crore or US$72.57 million to Bangladesh for welfare projects.

In this connection, an agreement was signed between the governments of the two countries at a function at CPTU conference room at the Planning Commission premises.

The grant has no spending bindings and will be utilized for the welfare projects such as disaster management, bridge construction and so on, ERD officials informed. 

Detailed matters will be stipulated in separate agreements to be signed between the two sides.

Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Monowar Ahmed and Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Zhang Zuo signed the grant deal on behalf of their respective sides.

High officials of Chinese Embassy in Dhaka and senior officials of Bangladesh government were present at the signing ceremony.

A good number of local infrastructure projects have been implemented with Chinese grants assistance earlier.

The schemes include construction or procurement of international standard conference centre in the capital, eight Bangladesh-China friendship bridges, agricultural equipment; hybrid rice technology cooperation, medical equipment, dredger and scanner for customs.

Besides, some important ongoing grant projects are construction of China-Bangladesh Friendship Exhibition centre at Purbachal, burn unit of Chittagong medical college, rescue equipment for fire service and flood management planning.
