Preparations afoot for Book Fair

Preparation for the Amar Ekushey Boi Mela 2019 is underway in full swing on Suhrawardy Udyan ground and Bangla Academy premises to welcome the book lovers at the month-long book fair from February 1.

Bangla Academy has taken various initiatives to draw more book lovers to the book fair.

“We will have elements in the fair for remembering and honouring the martyrs of the language movement. We will also portray the significance of the liberation war of 1971 and Bangabandhu. We have kept special arrangements for physically challenged persons so that they can visit the book fair without any difficulties. Besides, the space for “Shishu prohor”, (a special time schedule for the children) will be expanded,” Habibullah Siraji, director general of Bangla Academy, told the daily sun.  

“For ensuring overall security, we have also held meetings with law enforcing agencies so that the publishers, writers and readers feel safe while visiting the fair.”

In addition to the display of books, each day the fair will feature seminars, discussions and cultural events. There will be a dedicated corner for little magazines. Children’s literature will also be a key attraction, he said.

Nirapad Media and Communication, run by actor Ilias Kanchan, will oversee the total management of the book fair.

Two kinds of visitors come to the fair —- one for buying books while another kind of visitors throng the book fair for having a good time with families and friends. For all the visors, the fair will have food corners and toilets facilities. Special measures will be taken for smooth movements in the fair ground, the Bangla Academy chief said.

This year we will reserve a corner (Ami Lakhok Bolci) for the writers to allow them to discuss their books with readers.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the book fair on February 1. Two honorary guests —- Indian poet Shanka Ghosh and Egyptian writer and poet Mohsin Al Arishi are expected to join the inauguration programme.

Member secretary of the book fair, Dr Jalal Ahmed said, we are going to present the fair aesthetically and scientifically for that we are working with youth designers, engineers, architect and artists.

For the first time, we have launched an online application system for publications and received 750 applications of which 500 publications will attend the fair. There will be 25 pavilions and 650 units, he informed, adding that lottery for stall allocation will be held on 21 January.

“Biojy 52-71 Noboporjay” is the theme of Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2019, which signifies the victories in the language movement in 1952 and in the liberating war in 1971,” he said.

This year, a number of young and reputed architects, designers and artisans are working together in the beautification job of the fair venues’ he also informed.

During a visit to the fair ground at Bangla Academy premises and Suhrawardy Uddan grounds, workers were seen passing busy time building structure and stall of the fair.

From February 1, the book fair will open at 11:00 am and will continue till 8:30 pm.
