Acting Editor of the Daily Manobkantha Abu Bakar Chowdhury passed away on Tuesday at the age of 54.
He was rushed to a city hospital after he had a heart attack, said Najmul Haque Emon, Sub Editor of the daily.Two funeral prayers (namaz-e-janaza) – one in Dhanmondi’s Taqwa Mosque and another one on Jatiya Press Club premises — were held Tuesday afternoon.
Journalist leaders and Abu Bakar’s collogues paid homage to the editor before the funeral prayer at the Press Club. Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Dhaka Union of Journalists and Bikrampur-Munshiganj Journalist Forum also paid tribute.
Later the deceased was buried in Azimpur graveyard in the capital.
Born in 1968, Bakar Chowdhury graduated in management from Dhaka University. He began his career as a journalist at Weekly Prattayan in 1991 and later joined Shaptahik Khobor.
In 1995, he joined the Daily Ajker Kagoj as an associate editor. When the paper shut down, Bakar joined Amader Shomoy as chief news editor in 2009. He also worked for Shokaler Khobor and Samakal for a short period of time.
He began working for the Daily Manobkantha as the chief news editor in 2012 and was later promoted to the post of executive editor in 2017. He had been working as the acting editor of the newspaper since September, 2017.
