Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday that their ruling party will not participate in the next upazila parishad elections under any alliance.

“Our candidates will participate in the upazila polls under a party banner with our boat symbol,” he said.

Quader made the disclosure while addressing an extended meeting of AL Dhaka city north chapter at Dhanmondi in the capital on Tuesday.

The meeting was organised to discuss the preparations for an Awami League grand rally to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 19.

The minister urged partners of the Awami League-led alliance to take preparations for the polls on their own.

“No partner will be given ‘boat’ symbol to the alliance partners in the upcoming upazila elections,” he said.

The Election Commission hinted that upazila elections will be held in March. Poll schedules will be announced in the second week of February.

For the first time, upazila polls will be held in party lines. Previously, political parties unofficially supported the candidates, but this time aspirants will be able to contest the polls with their parties’ logos.

Denying his statement over dialogue, Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said he has never made any comment in favour of holding talks.

The minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will invite political parties to exchange greetings.

“There is no need to hold talks over the national election,” he said.
