COX’S BAZAR: Two suspected Rohingya drug peddlers were killed in a gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila in the district on early Saturday.
A total of 45,000 Yaba tablets were also recovered searching bodies of the unidentified drug peddlers aged around 20 to 25 years.Teknaf-2 BGB Commanding Officer Asadud Zaman Chowdhury said BGB men were patrolling in the Naf River at Rongikhali point and noticed two youths entering Bangladesh territory through swimming around 4:30am.
As the BGB men signalled them for a halt, the youths opened fire prompting the border guards to retaliate with bullets resulting in a gunfight, he said.
Later, two bodies were found searching the spot, said the BGB officer. On receiving information, police recovered the bodies and Yaba tablets kept tied with them.
Sub-Inspector Nurul Islam of Teknaf Police Station suspected that the youths were Rohingya and drug peddlers. The bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
