Veteran Awami League leader, mature parliamentarian, minister and a national leader in true sense has left us last Thursday after long struggle with a fatal disease. Bravely he fought with the disease but ultimately had to surrender to destiny. He is the proud son of our great national leader, Syed Nazrul Islam, who was acting president during the liberation war. Syed Ashraf was a thorough gentleman, very honest politician and served the people wholeheartedly till his death. During the political crisis of 1/11 caretaker government he managed the party affairs boldly, tactfully and efficiently even in the absence of party president Sheikh Hasina, who was in jail. As General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League for two terms he discharged his duties very successfully and efficiently. Such an honest politician like him is very rare not only in our country but also in the subcontinent. Nation will remember him forever with respect and love. It is a great loss for the country and the people. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace.
