Labour secy urges RMG workers

Labour Secretary Afroza Khan on Thursday urged the agitating garment workers to return to work keeping trust on the government to resolve and disparity in the wage structure.

“In the new wage structure, the wages in 3, 4 and 5 steps were not increased as expected. A committee has been formed. These issues will be resolved very quickly,” she said at a briefing after a meeting of the committee formed to review the wages structure.

The labour secretary said the hotline of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments will remain open 24 hours for receive complaints from garment workers.

“There may be a plot to destabilize this important industry in the country. Everyone should be aware of this,” she said, adding that all the stakeholders, including the owner and workers, have to work together to safeguard the garment industry, the country’s largest export-earning sector.

Lawmaker Salam Murshidi, BGMEA president Md Siddiqur Rahman, FBCCI president Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, former BGMEA president Atiqul Islam, MD of Mohammadi Group Rubana Haque, Jatiya Sramik League’s executive president Fazlul Haq Montu, women affairs secretary of Jatiya Sramik League Begum Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan, National Garment Workers Federation’s President Amirul Haque Amin, IndustriALL Bangladesh Council’s Secretary General Salahuddin Swapan and labor leaders Sirajul Islam Rony, Babul Akhter, Nazma and owner-labor leaders attended the meeting.
