Bangladesh is one of the world’s most thickly populated countries. We face danger from various accidents. Burning has become a major issue day by day. We see in recent years people getting burnt in different accidents like fire incident, political movement, etc. It’s a tradition in our country that any political movement won’t be complete without arson. The number of incidents and casualties are increasing.
But our hospital facilities are so poor. Only Dhaka Medical College Hospital had a burn unit with limited beds and services. In 1986, a burn unit was opened there with only six beds. The importance of the burn unit came into focus after the death of 127 people in Dhaka’s Nimtoli area fire incident in 2010. Then the government decided to build a large burn unit. The world’s largest burn and plastic surgery institute named Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery is located next to the Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyover in Dhaka’s Chankharpool area and adjacent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. There are three blocks in the institute. Among them, one block will be the burn unit block, one plastic surgery unit block and another academic wing block. It has 500 beds, 50 intensive care units and 12 operating theatres. The 12-storey institute will provide advanced treatment to burn patients while physicians and nurses will also get trainings to enhance their professional excellence. It was inaugurated on Wednesday October 24, 2018. As it has all the modern equipment and technology, people can get better treatment now. This institution will also create new employment. Students will graduate from here and researchers can research here.
