Crewmember dies in vessel fire in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM: A crew-member was burnt to death and two others were injured in a fire at an anchored vessel in the River Karnaphuli in the city on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 34, son Abul Khayer of Fatikchhari upazila in the district while the injured were Nahid, 18, and Md Mizan, 25.

Of them, Saiful was sailor of the vessel while Nahid and Mizan are workers.

Sources said a fire broke out at the vessel ‘MV APS-1’ at Bijoynagar Ghat in the river under Patenga Police Station at around 11:30pm.

The accident left the trio injured critically.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Utpal Baura of the police station said on receiving information, they rushed to the spot and rescued them from the vessel.

The accident might have been taken place due to an explosion of gas cylinder, he said.

The injured were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where physicians declared Saiful dead, said ASI Alauddin Talukdar of the hospital police outpost.

Injured Nahid was sent to the capital for better treatment while Mizan was undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.
