Movement of vehicles on most of the flyovers in the capital has become risky as drivers often stop buses in the middle of these structures to pick and drop passengers.

Sources said minor accidents are taking place on the flyovers very often  because of  stopping of buses but most of the accidents go unreported.

They said although picking and dropping passengers is prohibited on the flyovers, many bus drivers continue to do it in violation of traffic rules.

Besides, ghostly atmosphere prevails on some flyovers at night as most of the lights installed on the structures lie inoperative.

People are using the flyovers at night  amid risk of accident but the authorities of the two city corporations are not taking any steps to install lights.

While visiting Mouchak-Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Khilgaon, Kuril and Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyovers, the daily sun correspondent saw similar scene.

Drivers often stop buses for passengers in the middle of Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover.

Witnesses said workers, who are in charge of the flyover, also assist drivers and helpers in taking passengers. They reportedly collect Tk 10 to 20 from each bus driver or helper.

At least six bus stoppages have been found in Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover from Jatrabari to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Various buses and other vehicles usually stop vehicles at the flyover for picking and dropping passengers.

Many bus drivers and helpers told this correspondent that passengers are not available at Sayedabad and Jatrabari points when they use the flyover. They have to count loss for this reason.  So, they stop their buses on the flyover for taking passengers.

Sources said most of the buses will not use the flyover if buses are not allowed to stop on the structure.

A flyover worker said, “Hundreds of passengers get on or get off buses at various points of the flyover from morning to midnight. We have nothing to do in this regard.”

He said knowing the risk of life, passengers get on or get off buses on the flyover.  There are three consecutive stoppages on the flyover near the RAB-3 office adjacent to Rajdhani Super Market. Rash driving and competition to pick passengers is also going on.

Traffic policemen have no duty on the Hanif flyover. There are signboards on the flyover: “Don’t stop vehicle, passenger crossing prohibited”, but nobody follows it.

On May 17, a bike-rider was killed when he was hit by a bus competing with another bus on Mayor Hanif Flyover in the capital’s Jatrabari.

On April 18, a man has lost his leg after being hit by a bus on the Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyover in Dhaka’s Jatrabari.

During the visit, this correspondent saw that most of the lights of Mouchak-Moghbazar flyover have gone out of order. Due to lack of lights, serious accident may take place at any time.
