A Dhaka court on Saturday sent Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, to jail after rejecting remand prayers and bail in a case filed for extortion.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after Investigation Officer (IO) in the case Bajlur Rahman, also Sub-Inspector (SI) of Mirpur Model Police Station, produced Mozammel before the court with a fresh five-day remand prayer.Defence lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua also sought bail of Mozammel and cancellation of the fresh remand prayer.
In the new remand prayer it was said that important information was found from the accused during the previous remand. During primary investigation it was revealed that the accused used to demand and extort money from various transport workers association.
Therefore, it is necessary to take the accused in fresh remand for further questioning in order to recover the extorted money and reveal names of his associates, it added.
Police arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj two days after the extortion case was filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.
