EC should make it participatory, says Shirin

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday said the Election Commission (EC) should ensure participatory election.

She said this while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 9th conference of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) in Dhaka.

“Parliament is the centerpiece of parliamentary democracy for this people’s trust should be earned in national parliamentary election,” she said.

“Transparency in election process is one of the conditions for free and fair election.  The main goal of FEMBoSA is to achieve peoples’ trust after ensuring transparency in election process.”

“Free, fair, participatory, and neutral elections are the foundation of democracy.   Transparency in elections is undoubtedly difficult.”  

“Political party, candidates, voters, media, government institutions and citizens are the important stakeholders. These stakeholders are necessary to participate in the election to ensure transparency,” she added.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said the EC is committed to holding free, fair and neutral elections in according to the constitution.

The (FEMBoSA) conference will encourage us to hold a participatory election, he said.

Representatives from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives were present at the conference. The FEMBoSA was formed under the auspices of Bangladesh Election Commission in 2010.

Earlier, the 8th conference of the forum was held in Kabul, Afghanistan from September 24 to 25, 2017.

FEMBoSA began its journey in Bangladesh, in 2010. From then on, its annual meetings were held annually in Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Afghanistan, respectively.
