Rohingya youth shot dead in Cox’s Bazar

COX’S BAZAR: Miscreants shot a Rohingya youth to death over allegedly control of drug business at a camp at Teknaf upazila in the district on Friday afternoon.    

The deceased was identified as Md Abu Yaser, 22, son of Md Ismail Miah of unregistered Rohingya ‘Leda Camp’ in Hrilla area under the upazila.   

The victim also worked as volunteer for ‘Security Forces’ at International Organization for Migration (IOM) at the camp. 

Witnesses and sources said a group of youths, led by local Syed Alam and Redoan equipped with firearms opened fire in chest of Yaser while talking to others in front of a mosque at the camp at around 3:30pm. 

The attack left the Rohingya youth injured critically.

He was rushed to camp hospital where on-duty physicians declared him dead, the sources said.            

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ranajit Kumar Barua of Teknaf Model Police Station said they sent the body to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. 

Drives were going on to arrest the killers as they were identified, he said.

The OC said there had long been a dispute between the victim and locals over control of drug business at the camp.
