Dhaka South and Gazipur city corporations have allegedly allowed traders to set up cattle markets on the territory of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

DNCC officials claimed that cattle traders have set up a market at Aftabnagar on DNCC territory after taking permission from Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) while another cattle market allowed by Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) partially falls within the territory of DNCC at Uttara sector-10.

The DNCC sent letters to police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the two city corporations concerned so that none can use its territory without proper authorisation, an official told media on Friday.

A mobile court also has been engaged in this regard, officials said. DNCC did not allow cattle market at Aftabnagar to avoid possible clash involving lease, they said.

Another cattle market allowed by GCC near Turag area partially falls within the territory of DNCC, they alleged.

Contacted, GCC chief estate officer Shahadat Hossian said, “I heard of the issue but I did not receive any information from the DNCC authorities. On Sunday, we will discuss the issue but DNCC can take any legal step if the market falls within their territory.”

Chief estate officer of DNCC Aminul Islam said, “We have contacted both the city corporations. We are hopeful of reaching a solution soon.”

Despite repeated efforts over phone, this correspondent could not communicate with chief estate officer Abdul Malek of DSCC for comments.

When asked, DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon said, “We have conducted a joint survey and allowed cattle markets accordingly. We have allowed the market within our territory. The market may enter the DNCC territory due to its extension as it is the biggest cattle market in the city.”

DSCC allowed 15 cattle markets under the corporation area while DNCC allowed 10 cattle markets.
