A college girl was killed after being hit by a covered van at Barabari in Gazipur on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Farzana Alam Mim, 19, an eleventh grader at  Safiuddin Sarker Academy and College in Tongi and daughter of Faruk Hossain.

Gazipur traffic senior ASP Saleh Uddin Ahmed said a Mymensingh-bound covered van hit the girl while she was crossing the road around 11:00am leaving her seriously injured.

Locals rushed her to Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College and Hospital. From there she was shifted to Tongi Government Hospital where on-duty doctors declared her dead.

However, mob seized the covered van and caught its driver and gave him a good beating, he said, adding they also set fire to the vehicle.  

They also blocked the highway in College Gate area of Tongi.

Later, fire fighters rushed to the spot and doused the flame. Four fire-fighters were injured as agitating people swooped on them. The injured were identified as fire fighters Md Samsul Haque, Habibur Rahman, Zakaria and driver Azahar Uddin.
