A team of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is likely to visit the USA soon to persuade the international aviation authorities with latest updates to reopen direct the flight operation between Dhaka and New York.
The CAAB delegation will present the latest updates of airport and overall safety, a prerequisite for reopening the Dhaka-NY direct flights, to authorities concerned as part of the FAA’s second evaluation for attaining category-1 status. Presently, Bangladesh enjoys Category 2 rating.Category 1 rating by US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) means that the civil aviation authority complies with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
FAA has already completed a technical review the result of which was in favour of Bangladesh. Two more technical reviews will be conducted to complete the final assessment which will help reopening the Dhaka-New York flight.
CAAB director (flight safety and regulations) Chowdhury M Ziaul Kabir said that FAA suggested a set of findings in their last audit. A team of CAAB is scheduled to visit FAA to present the development of their findings.
“We have sought appointment of FAA and hope to visit the USA in the mid of August”, said Ziaul Kabir while talking to the daily-sun.
CAAB sources said that the first technical review was conducted on February 11-15 this year and the country’s status will be evaluated through two more reviews.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) also recently recognised the CAAB to receive ‘ICAO Council President Certificate’.This is in recognition of Bangladesh having achieved an Effective Implementation (EI) of 75 percent crossing the Global Average of 60 percent and making a 15 percent plus significant progress in optimising safety standards in Bangladesh.
CAAB is hopeful of attaining FAA category 1 that will facilitate Bangladesh to operate director flight between Dhaka- New York in near future and also enhance the image of country’s airport.
It may mention that Biman used to operate on Dhaka-NY route up until 2006 but stopped flying on the route on commercial grounds. Biman’s further attempts to resume operation could not be successful due to CAAB’s non-attainment of FAA Category 1 status.
