Awami League mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam has been elected in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election held on Tuesday by defeating his rival BNP’s contender Hasan Uddin Sarker by a large margin.
Returning Officer Rakib Uddin Mandol announced the unofficial results of GCC polls on Wednesday.AL candidate Jahangir Alam bagged 4,00,010 votes and his nearest contestant BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarker won 1,97,611 votes, according to unofficial results in 216 out of 425 polling stations.
Islami Oikkya Jote-nominated mayoral candidate Fazlur Rahman got 1,659 votes, Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Md Nasir Uddin 26,381 votes, Bangladeshi Islami Front candidate Md Jalal Uddin 1,860 votes, independent candidate Farid Uddin Ahmed 1,617 votes and Communist Party of Bangladesh candidate Kazi Md Ruhul Amin 973 votes.
Rakib Uddin said that 57.02 percent of total voters cast their votes during polls. Voters cast 648,749 votes in 416 centres. Of them, 630,111 votes were found to be valid and 18,638 invalid for various reasons.
Election Commission (EC) postponed voting at nine centres for irregularities such as snatching of ballot boxes and stuffing of ballot papers by force.
The number of voters in the nine centres where voting was suspended is around 23,995, according to EC.
