Many factors can darken your lips. Sunlight, pollution and of course, wearing lipstick too often without proper removal can result in dark lips which is mostly undesirable. If you are thinking gone are the days of beautiful pink lips, don’t lose hope! You can brighten your dark lips with these simple tricks and get back that rosy colour in your lips. Here is how:


Moisturize Well

Dry, damaged lips can have a dark appearance. Use a good quality lip balm no matter what the season is. Choose lip products with moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter and almond oil. Shea butter has been used since ancient times and is known for its antioxidant and moisturizing properties. Cocoa butter is often used to reduce discoloration from scarring. Almond oil is considered one of the best oils to improve the health and appearance of skin.


Use Sunblock

Protect your lips from the sun as you protect the rest of your skin. Lips don't tan but they can burn and become dry which will make them appear darker. Make sure your lip balm has sun blocking material of SPF 20 or greater. Use lipsticks with sun block of SPF 20.



Massage Your Lips

Massages can increase blood flow and brighten your lips. Massage your lips with almond oil every night before bed to deeply moisturize. You can also use ice cubes to moisturize and make them appear fuller and pink.



Remove dead skin with a good exfoliator. A simple sugar scrub can do just as fine. Make a sugar scrub by combining a tablespoon of white or brown sugar with just enough honey or olive oil to make a paste. Rub the mixture vigorously over your lips. After a minute wipe off with a damp washcloth. Follow with a soothing lip balm. Repeat twice a week. If irritation happens, reduce the number of times per week or rub more gently.


Remove Makeup Properly

After a long day of work, party or both, we often feel lethargic to do anything further. Removing makeup is one task that requires a lot of time and attention especially after we return home. So no matter how tired you feel, dedicate five to ten minutes in removing makeup. Use petroleum jelly or even coconut oil to remove lipstick and then wash your lips. Don’t forget to moisturize them afterward.

Besides taking care of your lips, take care of your skin as well. Rosy lips will look great only with skin that has also been taken care of properly. If the skin is damaged because of sunlight, pollution, etc, lips may not stand out that much. You can use a good soap or facewash, moisturizer and sunscreen to enhance your beauty.
