Transport workers observe strike on Ctg-Kaptai route

CHITTAGONG: Transport workers on Wednesday observed a daylong strike on Chittagong-Kaptai route protesting vandalism of vehicles by students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).

On December 3, a third-year student of the CUET fell victim to snatchers on his way to the university by CNG-run auto-rickshaw from Kaptai at around 11:00pm.

Following the incident, agitated students of the university vandalised at least 15 CNG-run auto-rickshaws, two passenger buses, one truck and other vehicles on Tuesday night.

Besides, they also put barricade on the Chittagong-Kaptai road for around three hours on the same day.

Following the incident, the Kaptai Bus Owners’ Association General Secretary Alamgir Hossain called for the strike for an indefinite period and warned that they would not operate vehicles until compensations are given.

The transport workers under the banner of the owners’ association enforced the strike on the route causing immense suffering to the commuters since Wednesday morning. CUET Public Relations Officer Md Rashed Parvez told the daily sun that a meeting was going on among the university authorities, transport workers and local administration to resolve the crisis till filing this report at around 7:30pm on Wednesday.
