Law enforcers detained a top leader of banned militant outfit Neo-JMB in connection with the hotel blast in capital’s Panthapath area on August 15 last year from Uttara on Sunday.

The arrestee was identified as Mamun, 21, a Surah member of Neo JMB and a bomb-making expert, police said.

Abdul Mannan, ADC of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, said, “A joint team of CTTC unit, intelligence wing of Police headquarters and Bogra police conducted a drive in Uttara sector 7 around 7:00pm on Sunday and detained Mamun.”

During primary interrogation, Mamun confessed that he is a bomb-making expert and was one of those who had planned to carry out sabotage on August 15 last year.

He also admitted that he prepared the bomb for the attack on August 15. Even he went to the hotel Olio International at Panthapath himself to convey the bomb to Saiful Islam.

The militant is said to be a trainer of other militants and fundraiser of the banned militant outfit.

According to the CTTC officials, Mamun took bomb making training from Mahfuz, another top leader of Neo-JMB. Since then, he has made bomb at different militant dens, including capital Dhaka.

During the initial interrogation, Mamun said he joined Neo-JMB through a militant named Abir alias Muazz. Abir was killed during an anti-militant drive in Patartek area in Gazipur last year.

CTTC officials said Mamun is a resident of Uttara area. He grew up there. He sat for the SSC exam last year from Uttara Town College but failed. After that he left home and had been hiding in different militant dens for nearly two years.

Earlier on August 15, police conducted an anti-militant drive at Hotel Olio International and prevented a possible attack on those marching towards Dhanmondi 32, marking the Mourning Day.

Saiful Islam, son of Abul Khayer of Dumuria upazila in Khulna, was killed in the drive.

The hotel is half a kilometre off Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, the historic house in Dhanmondi where the Father of the Nation was brutally killed along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975.

On August 16, a case was filed in this connection. Investigation report said arrested Tanvir Yeasin Karim and fugitive Akram Hossain Khan Niloy are the masterminds and fund providers, both of them are top leaders of banned Islamic militant outfit Neo-JMB.
