Ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said the misuse of section 57 should be stopped.
“There is an urgent need to stop misuse of section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act instead of repealing the provision,” Quader said.
Qauder, also road transport and bridges minister, came up with the remark after inaugurating the construction work of the much talked metro rail track and its elevated station at the city’s Agargaon.
Referring to the arrest of journalist Abdul Latif following a case filed against him under section 57 of the ICT Act, the minister said about the misuse of the law.
“It is the clear misuse of section 57 as the case was lodged over a trifling matter. The abuse of this section should be stopped instead of repealing it,” he said.
“The section has been included in the ICT Act aimed at controlling cyber crimes. But, nowadays the section is being used over trifling matters. An intense scrutiny is necessary to stop such misuses,” he added.
He called upon the information minister to intervene to end the crisis, saying, “I’ll not speak for cancellation of the law (section 57), but for stopping its misuse.”
The AL spokesperson also stood against the opinions of the civil society members who advised the Election Commission to deploy the army for a credible poll.
He opined that such demand is illogical.
“The use of army has clearly been mentioned in the constitution. So, there is no reason to create unnecessary debate on the issue,” he said.
