Leaders of some right based civil society, farmers and labors organisations and networks in Dhaka on Saturday urged the global community to help countries fighting poverty, inequality and climate change to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At a press conference at the National Press Club here today they said strengthening democratic institutions, decentralization of local governments and freedom of information and assembly are also fundamental to achieve the SDGs, reports BSS.
The press conference was organized by 21 organizations ahead of the Bangladesh government's presentation of its SDG VNR in UN HLFP due in New York next week.
Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD, AHM Bazlur Rahman of BNNRC, Rafiqul Islam of DUS, Aminul Rasul Babul of Unnayan Dhara Trust, Badrul Alam and Jayed Iqbal Khan of BKF, Mostafa Kamal Akhanda of COAST and Syed Aminul Haque of EquityBD were present on the occasion.
They said regional disparities and inequalities should be addressed on priority basis, action should be taken against illicit flows of resources and a balance approach in respect of infrastructure for growth and protection should be taken.
Besides, people need to be protected from climate fall out and international community must take the responsibilities of climate displacement.
The speakers also called for coordination among government agencies to check wastage of development budget and immediate steps to protect coastal area from natural disasters.
