Bangladesh Railway (BR) received the first consignment of 18 broad-gauge passenger coaches from India on Friday under a contract to procure 200 coaches.
RITES Ltd, a state-owned enterprise under India’s Ministry of Railways, delivered the coaches, which include three AC chair coaches, 11 Shovan chair coaches, one AC berth coach and a luggage van.
The consignment arrived at Darshana Railway Station in Chuadanga around 3pm through the Darshana–Joynagar checkpoint. Officials from BR’s Pakshi division received the coaches.
Painted red and green, the new coaches are expected to improve passenger services in the western region and help increase railway revenue, said Robiul Islam, divisional mechanical engineer of BR’s Pakshi division.
“The coaches are modern and of good quality,” he added.
In May 2022, Bangladesh Railway signed a contract with RITES Ltd to procure 200 broad-gauge passenger coaches at a cost of Tk1,205 crore.
