Model and actress Niha Chowdhury has begun a new chapter in acting with the single-episode drama ‘Chhuye Dilam Tomay’, opposite Tawsif Mahbub. Although she previously appeared in a BTV serial, she considers this a fresh start. In an interview with Md Jahidul Islam of the Daily Sun, Niha discussed her acting journey, working experiences, social media influence and future aspirations.
What is the story behind getting into acting?
There is no extraordinary story behind my decision. I have wanted to act since childhood but never had the right opportunity. ‘Chhuye Dilam Tomay’ happened quite unexpectedly. One day, director Rubel bhai’s team contacted me, and filming began within two or three days. Everything happened very quickly. However, my interest in acting goes back many years. Last year, I also completed an acting course and joined theatre to develop my skills. My love for acting ultimately brought me here.
How was your experience working on your first drama?
It was wonderful. Everyone welcomed me warmly and made me feel comfortable. Many people working in the industry watched my work and encouraged me. Some appreciated my acting and expressed interest in seeing me in future productions. Such encouragement gives a newcomer confidence to move forward.

Did you find acting in front of the camera challenging?
Initially, it was somewhat challenging, particularly because I was still getting accustomed to performing before the camera. However, the nervousness gradually disappeared, and I began enjoying the experience. The entire team was extremely supportive. They guided me through different scenes and helped me understand expressions and character portrayal. Their cooperation made everything easier. Now, I genuinely enjoy acting.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in acting?
I cannot name just one person. During childhood, I admired Suborna Mustafa and enjoyed watching her performances. Jaya Ahsan is another actress I admire immensely. I also grew up watching many dramas featuring Nusrat Imrose Tisha. Among contemporary artistes, I particularly appreciate Mehazabien Chowdhury. I consider her one of the finest actresses in television dramas.
How do you feel about working opposite Tawsif Mahbub at the beginning of your career?
I consider myself fortunate. Working alongside an actor like Tawsif bhai so early in my career is a significant opportunity. I gave my absolute best to the performance. My intention was to ensure that viewers would not feel I was inexperienced. I hope I’ve portrayed the character convincingly and that the audience will appreciate my efforts.

What kinds of characters would you like to portray in the future?
I do not want to limit myself to particular types of roles. Since I genuinely love acting, I want to explore diverse characters. My goal is to portray every character convincingly while continuously challenging myself.
Many promising newcomers eventually become irregular in the industry. What are your thoughts?
Nobody enters this industry intending to leave. Everyone begins with dreams and aspirations. However, personal circumstances and various challenges sometimes prevent artistes from continuing their careers. The audience acceptance is equally important. Even when someone works regularly, sustaining a career becomes difficult without viewers’ support. Alongside delivering quality performances, earning the audience’s love is essential.

What is your opinion on the growing tendency to measure popularity through digital views and social media followers?
Views have become an important measure of popularity, particularly for television dramas. Many people assume that higher views automatically indicate greater success. However, I believe an artiste’s talent should never be judged solely by views or follower counts. Many excellent productions fail to reach large audiences, while social media popularity does not necessarily reflect acting ability. Personally, I never evaluate an artiste based on digital numbers. Quality and performance matter much more to me.
How do you want to distinguish yourself from other newcomers?
I do not want to compare myself with anyone. Every artiste is trying to establish their own identity, and new performers are entering the industry regularly. Rather than competing with others, I want to concentrate on improving my abilities and delivering my best performances. I want audiences to watch my work and judge me through my performances.

What are your future plans?
For now, I want to work regularly in television dramas. There are also many promising productions being developed for OTT platforms. I hope to collaborate with talented directors on meaningful stories and quality projects. I’m not seriously considering films at this stage, although I would certainly explore cinema if a suitable opportunity and compelling story came along. My immediate priority is to establish myself through quality television and OTT productions.
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Five years from now, I hope to reach a position where the audience appreciate my performances and recognise me for my work. I want to establish a distinct identity as an actress. Being remembered and appreciated for my performances, rather than anything else, would be my greatest achievement.
Are you currently preparing for any new projects?
Discussions and planning are underway for several projects. However, filming has not yet been completed, so I would prefer not to reveal details prematurely. Hopefully, the audience will see me in several new projects very soon.
