Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid on Saturday pledged to address existing problems at Comilla Medical College Hospital (CuMCH) and said efforts would be made to increase its bed capacity to 1,000.
He made the remarks while attending the Intern Graduation Ceremony (Cum-29) and Doctors’ Reunion 2026 as chief guest at the newly constructed auditorium of Comilla Medical College, according to a press release.
The minister also serves as president of the Comilla Medical College Hospital Management Committee.
He said the government was prioritising the supply of essential medical equipment to medical colleges and that he would discuss the hospital’s equipment needs with the health minister.
Emphasising proper maintenance, he urged hospital authorities to keep medical equipment functional throughout its designated service life. The minister also stressed the importance of compassionate, patient-centred healthcare, urging doctors to listen carefully to patients, understand their health concerns and provide appropriate advice. “Spending adequate time with patients and listening carefully to their concerns help build their confidence and provide mental comfort. Sincerity and humane behaviour are as important as medical treatment,” he said.
Addressing broader public health concerns, Aminur Rashid said environmental pollution and declining food quality could adversely affect human health. He said the government was taking measures to ensure food safety and control harmful pesticides. He urged doctors to go beyond prescribing medicines and advise patients on disease prevention, safe and nutritious food, and healthy lifestyles.
Proper dietary habits and lifestyle changes could help reduce the risk of many diseases, he said, calling on physicians to raise public awareness about preventive healthcare. Addressing the newly graduated doctors, the minister urged them to work for public welfare and uphold high standards of professionalism, responsibility and compassion. “Serve the people with sincerity and dedication, earn the trust of your patients and work together to build a better world for future generations,” he said.
The programme was chaired by Comilla Medical College Principal Professor Dr Md Masum Hasan. Administrator of Comilla City Corporation Md Yusuf Mulla Tipu attended as a special guest. Senior physicians, faculty members and other officials were also present.
