Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said those involved in supplying substandard textbooks will face exemplary punishment.

He made the remarks while addressing a programme titled “Public Thoughts on the Development of Kachua”, organised by Dhaka-based Kachua Upazila Samity at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital on Saturday.

Speaking about textbook preparation, printing and distribution, the minister said there would be no compromise on the quality of textbooks.

“Textbooks found to be substandard have already been cancelled and destroyed. Those involved in supplying such books will be given exemplary punishment,” he said.

Milon said no compromise would be made on the quality of paper, ink and printing presses used for textbooks.

“The quality of paper, ink and printing presses will not be compromised. The Prime Minister wants to develop the domestic printing industry, which is why no foreign company has been given printing work this year,” he said.

He said Bangladesh had previously managed to print and supply quality textbooks on time and expressed hope that the country would be able to do so again.

The minister also said the government had introduced a mid-day meal programme in primary schools in 150 upazilas to ensure quality education and that the initiative would gradually be expanded across the country. Regarding the re-evaluation of examination scripts, Milon said changes had been introduced based on practical considerations.
