The Nebugati Community Clinic in a remote area of Manirampur upazila in Jashore has fallen into a dilapidated condition due to a prolonged lack of renovation, putting both patients and healthcare workers at risk.
Locals said the clinic gets surrounded by water on three sides during the rainy season, while water hyacinths have grown extensively around the facility. Water also enters the clinic during rainfall, and locals and clinic staff said snakes and other insects are occasionally found inside.
The clinic building was constructed in 1999 on five decimals of land beside the Hazirhat-Nehalpur road, south of Hazirhat Bazar in Haridaskati union. It provides primary healthcare services to around 7,000 people from five villages—Panchkatia, Bhulbaria, Nebugati, Kuchalia and Diganga. Locals said the two-room building has not been renovated for a long time. Plaster has peeled off from the walls, while cracks have developed in its columns, beams and roof, raising fears that parts of the building could collapse.
Lakshmi Rani Mondal, a housewife from Diganga village, said the clinic has no suitable place for patients to sit and its only toilet has become unusable.
"Female patients are facing particular difficulties because of the lack of a usable toilet," she said.
Community Healthcare Provider (CHCP) Mithun Biswas said the clinic currently has a regular supply of medicines and provides primary healthcare to around 35 to 40 patients a day. "During the rainy season, water enters the clinic. Snakes and various insects also occasionally get inside. Despite the risks, we continue providing healthcare services every day," he said. He said the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer had been informed several times about the need to renovate the clinic. Monirampur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Faiyaz Hossain Faisal said higher authorities had been informed about the need to renovate the clinic.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Samrat Hossain said necessary measures would be taken soon to renovate the facility.
