Hadi murder probe at final stage

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has reached the final stage of its investigation into the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

CID Special Superintendent (SS) Jasim Uddin Khan said, “We have identified the mastermind behind Hadi's murder, but cannot disclose the name for the sake of the investigation.”

The investigation had reached its final stage, he told the Daily Sun.

CID's Dhaka Metro East unit detected six additional suspects in connection with the murder. Of the suspects, three – Chhatra League leader Muhammad Rubel, firearm supplier Majedul Haque Helal and motorcycle owner Mynuddin Shuvo – had been arrested, the policeman added.

During interrogation, arrestee Rubel disclosed the names of ex-MP Jahangir Kabir Nanak’s personal secretary Masudur Rahman Biplob and Chhatra League’s Adabar unit general secretary Kamruzzaman Rubel, said CID sources.

A forensic examination of a firearm recovered from Narsingdi after the murder last year confirmed that it had been used in the killing.

Following the serial number of the weapon, the CID arrested its supplier, Majedul Haque Helal. During questioning, he reportedly revealed that former organising secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of Jubo League, Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, had taken the firearm from him.

The latest arrestees have given confessional statements before a Dhaka court, CID sources said.

The CID is now trying to bring suspected killers Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain back from India. The charge sheet may be submitted after they are interrogated, he added.

The CID was assigned the investigation on 15 January this year after the plaintiff filed a no-confidence petition over the charge sheet submitted by the Detective Branch (DB).

On 12 December 2025, Hadi, 32, was shot in Dhaka's Paltan area. He was airlifted to Singapore General Hospital on 15 December and died three days later, on 18 December.

A murder case was subsequently filed with Paltan police station.

On 6 January, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted a charge sheet against 17 people, naming former Ward No 6 councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Pallabi unit Jubo League President Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, and Faisal Karim Masud as the shooter.

The other accused are Jasmine, Alamgir, Philip, Humayun Kabir, Hasi Begum, Shaheda Parvin Samia, Wahid Ahmed Shipu, Maria Akter Lima, Mukti Mahmud, Md Kabir, Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Ujjal, Sibion Dio, Sanjoy Chisim, Aminul Islam Raju and Abdul Hannan. Of them, police arrested 12.
