Banks have started disclosing their 2025 financial results, with three lenders so far entering the “Tk1,000-crore profit club” based on annual business performance, compared with two banks in the previous year.
Private sector lenders BRAC Bank, City Bank and Pubali Bank secured their places in the club after posting net profits exceeding Tk1,000 crore for the year ended 31 December 2025.
According to the banks, the strong earnings were driven by a high interest-rate environment, higher investment income, growth in trade and fee-based businesses, and comparatively prudent risk management.
BRAC Bank topped the list in profitability, posting a standalone net profit of Tk1,581 crore in 2025, up from Tk1,214 crore a year earlier.
The bank announced a 30% dividend for 2025, comprising 15% cash and 15% stock, compared to 25% total in 2024.
Company Secretary M Mahbubur Rahman FCS said BRAC Bank’s continued focus on customer trust and corporate governance helped sustain its financial success.
City Bank ranked second in terms of profitability and also recorded its highest-ever earnings in 2025.
On a standalone basis, the bank posted a net profit of Tk1,306 crore, while its four subsidiaries added Tk18 crore, taking consolidated net profit to Tk1,324 crore, up 31% from the previous year.
According to its financial statement, earnings per share (EPS) rose to Tk8.7 in 2025 from Tk6.7 a year earlier.
The growth was supported by a 16% rise in operating profit, which increased from Tk2,351 crore to Tk2,727 crore.
The bank’s main income source remained interest earnings from loans, which rose 24% to Tk5,452 crore from Tk4,403 crore.
At the same time, City Bank increased its investment in government securities to offset higher funding costs.
The bank also reported strong growth in fee-based businesses. Income from trade services stood at Tk526 crore, while retail and card business generated Tk471 crore.
As a result, total fee and commission income reached Tk997 crore, accounting for 21% of total operating income.
Asset quality also improved during the year, with the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio declining to 2.5% from 3.7%.
Provision expenses rose to Tk815 crore, pushing the provision coverage ratio up to 128%, indicating a stronger buffer against potential risks.
Meanwhile, Pubali Bank entered the thousand-crore profit club for the first time.
The bank posted a net profit of Tk1,090 crore in 2025, up 40% from Tk780 crore in the previous year.
According to its financial report, interest income from loans rose to Tk6,697 crore in 2025 from Tk5,845 crore in 2024, an increase of Tk852 crore or more than 14.5%.
However, the bank also faced higher deposit costs, with interest expenses rising by Tk1,413 crore, or 33% year-on-year.
To offset the pressure, Pubali Bank increased its investment in government bills and bonds.
Income from these investments surged to Tk3,546 crore in 2025 from Tk2,062 crore a year earlier, marking an increase of Tk1,484 crore or around 72%.
Company Secretary Anisur Rahman said strong corporate governance and a low level of non-performing loans, at 2.2%, were key factors behind the bank’s success.
The bank’s total loan portfolio stood at around Tk71,000 crore, while investment in government securities was approximately Tk30,000 crore.
Pubali Bank also raised its dividend payout.
For 2025, the bank declared a 30% dividend, including 15% cash and 15% stock, compared to 25% total in 2024.
