The trial of several senior Awami League leaders, including former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, is likely to begin next month at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) over alleged crimes during the 2024 mass uprising.
At the same time, the tribunal has directed investigators to complete the probe within three months in another case involving several former ministers and senior officials of the previous government.
The ICT-1, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, on Sunday fixed 7 May for an order on charge framing in the case against Taposh, Nanak and others. The tribunal also set 26 July as the deadline for submitting the investigation report in the separate case.
ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim and other prosecutors represented the state during the hearings.
There are 28 accused in the Taposh, Nanak’s case, of whom four are in custody. They are leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League Naimul Hasan Russel, Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk and Fazle Rabbi.
On 18 January 2026, the tribunal showed the four arrested in the case and sent them to jail, while issuing arrest warrants against the remaining 24 accused.
According to the prosecution, the accused incited and were directly or indirectly involved in opening fire on civilians and students during the 2024 uprising. Nine people, including Mahmudur Rahman Saikat and Farhan Faiyaz, were killed in Mohammadpur, while many others were injured. The prosecution claims to have supporting evidence, including footage.
Other accused include former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, former additional DIGs Biplob Kumar Sarker and Proloy Kumar Joarder. The former DMP chief has already been sentenced to death in another case linked to the 2024 incidents.
In a separate case, the tribunal granted an additional three months to complete the investigation involving 46 accused, including former ministers, state ministers, secretaries and a retired judge.
Nine accused were produced before the tribunal in this case. They include former industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, former agriculture minister Md Abdur Razzaque, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni, former textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan, former prime minister’s energy adviser Taufiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, former MP Solaiman Selim, former Supreme Court judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and former home secretary Jahangir Alam.
Several other accused, including former law minister Anisul Huq, former prime minister’s adviser Salman F Rahman and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, are already facing trial in separate crimes against humanity cases.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim submitted a progress report and expressed hope that the investigation would be completed within the extended timeframe.
