A powerful nor’wester has destroyed more than 100 houses in Nohali Union of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur, leaving hundreds of people without any shelter under the open sky.

The storm struck several areas, including Char Nohali, Char Bagdahara Nijpara, Chakidar Para and Memmar Para in Wards no 2, 7 and 8, early Friday accompanied by heavy rain and hailstorms.

On-the-ground observations revealed that many houses were completely flattened, forcing affected families to take temporary shelter during the day and spend nights under the open sky without adequate food or cooking facilities. Victims, including Moon Mia, Shuja Mia, Rafiqul Islam, Sumon, Jahanur, Lavlu, Rahel and Aseda Begum, reported severe losses. Many said they had taken loans to cultivate crops, which were also destroyed in the storm.

“At least 100 families have been affected. Many people were injured, but no local or administrative representatives have visited the area yet,” said Md Al-Amin, president of Bagdahara Satta Kalyan Sangstha.
Affected residents alleged that neither the Union Parishad nor the upazila administration has taken any visible steps to provide relief or assistance.

Despite repeated attempts, local UP member Rezaul Islam Bullet and UP Chairman Ashraf Ali could not be reached for comments. Officials of the Gangachara Upazila administration, including the Project Implementation Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer, also did not respond to calls or messages. With no immediate support, victims are urging authorities to provide emergency assistance, particularly housing materials such as tin sheets, to help them rebuild their homes.
