BNP ‘determined’ to implement July Charter, say senior leaders
A A

Senior leaders of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have reaffirmed the party’s “unwavering” commitment to the July Charter, vowing to institutionalise the document’s principles through formal constitutional amendments.
Addressing various events on Saturday, front-benchers dismissed claims that the party was backtracking on reforms, characterising such narratives as “deliberate propaganda” aimed at sowing national confusion.

Fakhrul denounces ‘false’ reform narrative
Speaking at a discussion marking “Teliapara Day” in Madhabpur, Habiganj, BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir categorically rejected suggestions that the ruling party was averse to reform.
“The claim that the BNP does not want reforms is entirely baseless and is being circulated to mislead the public,” Fakhrul noted, adding, “The BNP is not only in favour of reforms but is actively moving to implement them.”
The BNP secretary general also took aim at those attempting to diminish the legacy of the 1971 independence struggle.
“The Liberation War is our identity and our pride. It is our very existence,” he said, while acknowledging the 2024 student-led uprising against the “fascist” Sheikh Hasina administration as a “glorious new chapter” in the nation’s history.
Warning party rank-and-file against complacency following their landslide electoral victory, he added: “We intend to steer this country toward political and economic stability. We must ensure no self-inflicted setbacks harm the party, and there will be absolutely no room for corruption within our folds.”
A systematic approach to the charter: Dr Zahid
In Dinajpur, during a cheque distribution ceremony, BNP Standing Committee member and Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain emphasised that the party is taking a “methodical and systematic” approach to the July National Charter.
“The BNP regards the July National Charter – signed at the South Plaza of the National Parliament – as a sacred national document,” Dr Zahid remarked. “We are proceeding according to established rules and principles, as governance cannot be dictated by emotion alone; it requires a robust institutional framework.”
He further noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is dedicated to fulfilling every pledge made in the party’s manifesto for the 13th parliamentary election, while honouring the democratic sacrifices made in 1971, 1990, and 2024.

Constitutional amendments the way forward: Asaduzzaman
Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, speaking at the inauguration of a canal excavation project in Jhenaidah, clarified the legal roadmap for the Charter.
He insisted that the implementation would be secured through the legislature.
“There are no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’ regarding this. Those claiming the July Charter would be nullified if the referendum is cancelled are trying to deceive the public,” the law minister said.
He maintained that the charter’s validity is “independent and unique,” and does not hinge on a public vote.
Mr Asaduzzaman also moved to quash rumours regarding the scrapping of the Human Rights Commission Act, the Disappearance Commission, and the proposed independent secretariat for the Supreme Court.
“None of these initiatives have been abandoned,” he assured. “These matters are currently under review, and we will introduce updated bills following a thorough evaluation.”
