Once regarded as a quiet, border-adjacent district in the Rangpur Division, Nilphamari has undergone a remarkable transformation into a rapidly developing urban centre.
Residents are now benefiting from a wide range of essential civic amenities typically associated with well-planned municipal areas. This progress has been made possible through extensive development initiatives undertaken in recent years.
A modern supermarket, situated at the heart of the town, has significantly enhanced both the aesthetic appeal and convenience of daily life. Residents can now access a variety of goods at reasonable prices close to their homes. The facility is currently being expanded into a two-storey building.
In addition, the town’s traditional playground, locally known as ‘Boro Math’, has been upgraded with the installation of steel benches and pedestrian walkways. Decorative lighting has also been installed on electric poles, further enhancing the town’s visual appeal.
Simultaneously, improvements such as a modern drainage network, upgraded road infrastructure, high-powered street lighting, and the development of slum areas have collectively contributed to transforming Nilphamari into a more modern municipality.
According to the Nilphamari Municipality Office, these developments have been implemented under several major projects, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), climate funding mechanisms, and the municipality’s own resources.
Speaking to The Daily Sun, Mohammad Tarique Reza, executive engineer of Nilphamari Municipality, stated, “Our goal is to present the people of Nilphamari with a modern municipality. Development work is ongoing to achieve this vision.”
Mohammad Saidul Islam, additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) and administrator of Nilphamari Municipality, also told The Daily Sun, “Since the current government assumed office, we have been working to ensure visible development across the municipality in accordance with established rules and regulations. These efforts will continue.”
He further added, “Our Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nuruzzaman has been highly committed to these development initiatives.”
