Water Resources Minister Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Wednesday sought cooperation from all, regardless of political affiliation, in carrying out their duties effectively, saying the new government has taken on a challenging responsibility after a long period of struggle and sacrifice.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on his first working day following the formation of the new government by the BNP after its resounding victory in the 12 February polls, he said, “After enduring great hardship, sacrifice, oppression and persecution, we have finally been able to take on this new and challenging responsibility.”

The minister urged everyone to pray for the government as it has begun its important duties and expressed gratitude for the support received so far.

Anee arrived at the Secretariat at 12:51pm when officials of his ministry welcomed him with a bouquet on the ground floor of Building 6.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and by the will of Allah, we will strive to carry out all our responsibilities properly and with sincerity,” he said.

Noting that they want to rise above party lines, the water resources minister expressed hope that with collective support, the government will successfully fulfil its responsibilities.

Wednesday marked the first working day of the newly formed cabinet under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Earlier in the morning, ministers and state ministers paid tribute to the Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar. In the afternoon, the first cabinet meeting was held at the Secretariat, presided over by the prime minister.
