Order on Fakhrul’s bail petitions Nov 16

The High Court on Wednesday fixed November 16 for passing order on three petitions filed by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir seeking bail in the three arson cases filed against him with Paltan police station.

An HC bench comprising justice M Rezaul Haque and justice M Khasruzzaman passed the order after a hearing, UNB reports.

President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Advocate Jainul Abedin stood for the petitioner while Additional Attorney General Tajuddin Fakir represented the state.

On 2 November, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court asked Mirza Fakhrul to surrender to a lower court turning down his bail petition seeking extension of the deadline for his surrender in the three cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Maruf Hossain sent the BNP leader to jail rejecting his bail prayers after he surrendered before a court here on November 3.

On 21 June, the HC granted bail to Fakhrul until disposal of the High Court rule over granting him permanent bail in the three cases.

On 13 July, rejecting the state lawyers’ plea against Fakhrul’s bail, the Appellate Division upheld the High Court bail for six weeks to the BNP acting secretary general in the three cases on health grounds.

The court also asked Fakhrul to surrender before the trial court before expiry of the bail.

On 6 October, the SC extended until November 2 its order asking the BNP acting secretary general to surrender before the lower court in three cases.

The BNP leader also filed a petition before the SC seeking further extension of his bail by eight weeks on 28 October, but the court asked him to surrender before the lower court.
