Election Commissioner Mohammed Abdul Mobarak on Sunday said that the Election Commission (EC) is planning to organise the forthcoming local government elections on a party basis, BSS reports.
Explaining the context, Mobarak said, "We understand that the government is mulling over the prospects of holding local elections on a party basis. If that is the case parliament will have to pass a new law to the effect and issue a gazette notification. Only then can we act on it."
With municipal elections slated for December, this year and Union Parishad elections scheduled for March, next year, the government will have to move fast, he said.
Political parties like Jamaat-e-Islami which had been deregistered by the EC cannot participate in the election, if the new law is passed.
The party lost its electoral registration on August 1, 2013 following a directive by the High Court. The party had registered with the EC in 2008.
