Goyanath Sarker, a veteran teacher from Kumarpara village in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna, spent 48 years of his life educating students, many of whom went on to become highly educated professionals and senior officials.
Yet at present, this once-respected teacher is struggling to survive, earning his livelihood as a mason.
Forced by financial hardship, Sarker now works as a day labourer to support his wife and three children — a reality he never imagined facing in his later years.
His story, first reported in a national daily, drew the attention of acclaimed writer Imdadul Haq Milan, Founder of Bashundhara Shuvosangho and Adviser to Bashundhara Group.
Moved by his plight, Milan urged the organisation’s central committee to provide assistance. On Saturday afternoon, members of Chatmohar upazila Shuvosangho visited Sarker’s home and assured him of a fixed monthly financial grant.
They also pledged to support his children’s education so it continues without interruption.
“I started tutoring while still a student myself and spent decades teaching,” said Sarker, his voice choked with emotion.
“I never thought I’d have to leave the profession and work as a mason. I wanted to live with dignity until my last days. But today’s assurance from Bashundhara Shuvosangho is something I’ll never forget.”
Imdadul Haq Milan said, “Bashundhara Shuvosangho always stands by humanity. Seeing a man who shaped countless students now living in such hardship touched us deeply. Bashundhara Group is committed to supporting people in need and working for the welfare of the country.”
The visit was attended by Abdul Latif Ronju, Chatmohar Upazila Correspondent of Kaler Kantho, along with Shuvosangho officials Mehedi Hasan Sujon, Yusuf Mondal, Majid Hossain, Jewel Rana, Amit Sarker Shawon, and Inajul Islam.
